Benefits of STEM Education for Children: Part 1

Every parent wants to give their child the best foundation to succeed as an adult. Unfortunately, as a parent your hands are tied with the curriculum that your child receives in school. Lower-income schools do not have access to the same level of education as other schools, because they lack the funding for hands-on research projects or after-school curricular activities. Thankfully, organizations such as the IRISE Research and Discovery Science are bringing low-cost solutions to STEM education to classrooms.

What is STEM?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM classes encourage students to develop problem-solving skills in a hands-on environment. Even if a student chooses to pursue a career outside of STEM, the principles learned in STEM classes set the foundation for many critical thinking abilities. STEM classes are important for students to be exposed to from an early age, so they begin to develop these problem-solving skills early in life.

Benefits of STEM Education

One of the biggest questions from parents is why their child needs to be exposed to STEM classes if their interests lie in a different field. In elementary and high school, children need a well-rounded education to develop a myriad of skills. STEM classes lay the foundation for many cognitive thinking abilities, and come with the following benefits:

1. Boost Creativity

STEM classes are great ways for students to improve their creativity. Oftentimes, an out-of-the-box solution is required to solve a problem. STEM classes are also great ways to bring disciplines together for an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving.

2. Encourages Teamwork and Collaboration

During a STEM class, students may be asked to partner together for an experiment, give a presentation together, or help each other achieve the desired end result. This process of working in teams to find a solution is a great basis for teamwork and social skills. Adults need to collaborate in the workplace every day since everyone has a different specialty. STEM classes are a great foundation for children to begin to learn these soft skills.

3. Teaches Problem Solving

It is no surprise that STEM classes are great ways to foster problem-solving skills in children. Working through an experiment helps kids think at a critical level.

Bringing STEM education to children should not be overlooked due to its tremendous benefits. Contact Professor Jenkins at the IRISE Research and Discovery Center at 678-785-9662 to learn about how you can bring STEM education to your kids in the classroom. We offer hands-on experiments to introduce students to the STEM field.
